The Only Job That Requires 100% Accuracy

Society unfairly judges child welfare social workers who must make the right decision one hundred percent of the time, as the wrong choice can end a child’s life. When they make a mistake, the media depicts them as cruel, uncaring, and not doing their job by removing the child from the home. There is a public outcry against the worker and agency, which dies down when the worker leaves.

The public never sees the mountain of paper work required for each investigation, long hours worked, constant danger from verbal and physical threats, emergency calls at three AM requiring immediate action to protect a child. Their employed by the state, which demands a master’s degree, and they are required to follow state guidelines during their investigations. Each case has mitigating circumstance, making them unique causing the one hundred % accuracy requirement to be unrealistic.

The burden and stress these workers carry leads to burn out, loss of caring, poor decisions to protect themselves, drug abuse, alcohol addiction, and leaving the job.

A child social worker is a rare breed who makes the right decision nine times out of ten, but must live with one mistake forever. Society should not be so quick to judge as they make mistakes, which do not carry the same weight.

The one hundred % accuracy is a burden no human should have to carry alone; the state should change their rules and regulations taking some of the responsibility. The public should not condemn the worker until all the facts are established, as without them child abuse would be a major epidemic.
