Sports Talk Radio Has Forgotten The Caller/Fan

In the past, sports talk radio was a give and take between the host and caller resulting in heated arguments bringing in more callers and longer discussions. They drew large audiences, as fans were the main feature and the host a knowledgeable moderator who kept the discussions flowing. Fans felt their opinions were important and enjoyed defending their team.

Today, sports talk radio is in every major city and affiliates are spreading to smaller markets as sports dominate the national conscious. The hosts, sports experts, and special guests are the new stars while the caller is just a fill in. They limit the number of callers that participate, are platforms for their opinions, a showcase of their personal lives, and filled with commercials.

Hosts consider fans avid die-hards acting on pure emotion who argue from illogical perspectives, and cut them off before they finish. Listeners wait on the phone for extended periods, never get on the program, and only have a few moments when they do. The interaction between the fan and host no longer exists; fan discontentment is increasing as their dialogue has no value, and their opinion insignificant.

If, sports talk radio wants to continue they must get back to conversing with the caller or soon they will go the way of the rotary phone.
