Florida is holding primaries for local offices including governor with Rick Scott and Bill McCollum battling for the republican nomination. Scott a multi-millionaire who bombarded TV with ads concentrating on his pristine character and impeccable credentials as CEO of a hospital group, which served thousands of patients, was successful, and made a profit. He has a seven-point booklet free to the public on how to get people back to work, accountability on spending, a balanced budget, Medicaid and Medicare fraud would be brought under control, illegal immigrants would be sought out, and Medicaid recipients would be drug tested.

As the primaries draw closer Scott’s ads switched gears to lambast McCollum for his stance on immigration, pay raises which benefit him, and personal use of the state airplane. McCollum fired back zeroing in on the billions of dollars Scott’s hospitals defrauded from Medicare and the 1.7 million dollar fine imposed on his hospitals. Scott retaliated by filing a petition to limit the public funding McCollum was receiving, reducing his spending which enabled Scott to continue his million dollar TV ads, which came from his share of the defrauded Medicare money. The candidate TV ads are now full-blown mudslinging and shit bombing on personal character, civility is gone, negativity rules supreme, and issues affecting the citizens are never discussed.

This primary is an example of the disease affecting our nation’s politicians and elections. Mudslinging and shit bombing your opponent is the only way to get elected or re-elected. Politicians’ no longer debate the issues faced by their constituents or put forth solutions fearing they will be used against them. McCollum is a career politician while Scott is a bored millionaire, who defrauded the American people via the Medicare system and is using this money to get elected. These two men represent typical politicians in this century and until voters demand better-qualified individuals, we will have to choose between bad or worse.
