Today in California, a federal judge overturned Proposition 8, which 52% of the population voted in favor of banning same sex marriages denying the minority their right. He further ruled there is no evidence children raised by a homosexual couple are deprived of love. Lastly, if the purpose of marriage is to have children it is not guaranteed, as some couples choose not to have children and some cannot bear children.

This judgment scared the heterosexual population as it threatened their way of life and religious believes. Proposition 8 was fueled by a religious organization stating homosexuality is against God’s laws, and it is unnatural for people of the same sex to engage in sexual activity. The majority is afraid of homosexuals because they cannot understand sexual attraction to the same sex, are comfortable with the status quo, and marriage is ordained to be between a man and woman. Homosexuals have lived in the shadows as it is the ultimate stigma, and fear of exposure drove them into the closet. The homosexual skeleton has emerged threatening the current situation impacting the comfort and sexual security of the majority.

The time has come for homosexuals to be given equal rights under the law, they should not be denied because of homophobia, religious beliefs, or the children they raise may become homosexuals and have emotional and psychological problems as adults. This Proposition is another example of people not accepting a person’s sexual preference by condemning them and wanting things to stay status quo. Homosexuals and heterosexuals follow the same rules and laws and each should possess freedom of speech and expression. Homosexuals contribute to society, are law abiding, love their partners and children, and the majority should not judge but welcome another diverse group of Americans.
