On February 19, 1942, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 opening the internment camps for people of Japanese descent in response to the public hysteria after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Japanese American citizens and their families were placed in camps against their will, and those deemed troublemakers were sent to the prison at Tule Lake, CA. These citizens did not plan the attack or fly the planes that dropped the bombs; but being Japanese made them guilty by association.
On September 11, 2001 terrorist flew hi-jacked aircraft into New York’s twin towers killing over two thousand citizens. Osama bin-Laden a Muslim extremist and his gang al-Qaeda bragged and took responsibility. Americans displayed their anger nationwide by attacking Muslim citizens, as they were guilty by association.
These examples demonstrate Americans reaction when foreigners attack our people on home soil. The consequence for people guilty by association is harsh and swift. We are an arrogant bunch filled with anger and when attacked feel nobody has that right and will not get away with it. Americans won WWII and the internment camps were disbanded before wars end. The terrorist attacks on Sept 11 still haunt us as Osama bin-Laden is still alive and roaming free in Afghanistan. Nine years is a long time to carry hate around, but we are good at this.
Muslims want to build a mosque close to the twin towers. An army of protesters believes it will dishonor the ones killed, is too close to ground zero, and should be built elsewhere. Muslims are surprised by this behavior, as Americans are known for their religious tolerance. What Muslims don’t realize is this is about Osama bin-Laden and not their religious practices. Muslims remind Americans of Osama and his gang, making them guilty by association. We have not settled the score with him and until we do, a mosque would be a constant reminder of our failed revenge.
