Seventy-seven days ago the oilrig New Horizon sank to the bottom of the Gulf and oil is still flowing with no relieve in sight until mid-August. BP brought in hundreds of vessels and people to clean up the crude, but their success has been minimal, and they are bleeding money faster than the oil is destroying the environment and the wild life. Eventually, the well will be capped and the oil will be stopped but the damage will take generations to clean-up.
BP has already spent over 3 billion dollars on the project and soon will file for bankruptcy. This will take place within a year of the disaster, as they will have spent over 20 billion dollars causing them to dissolve in order to survive. Once the bankruptcy is finalized, they will change their name, restructure, and within five years be one of the richest oil corporations in the world.
The environment will take decades to repair itself even if all the oil is removed. Oil has penetrated far into the marshlands and deep into the Gulf is fishing grounds causing irreparable damage to these eco-systems. Already, people are being affected indirectly as the seafood coming from this region is no longer available causing restaurants too change what is served around the country. The country will get use having seafood from the Gulf but many will hope to savor that flavor again in their lifetime.
The devastation to the wildlife will never be fully measured, as there is no way to count the deaths of the endangered sea turtles. The bird’s habitats will be destroyed reducing their numbers, as there will be no way to determine how many would have been born. Thousands upon thousands of small sea creates which inhabit these lands will be killed and may never return.
The people will suffer the greatest injustice, as their way of life will be gone forever. Once BP files for bankruptcy, the money they are receiving will dry up and the only thing left for them to do will be to sue. The lawsuits already filed are in the thousands, and by the time they get to court, it will take decades to settle. The people whose livelihood has been affect will pack up and leave causing some towns and parishes in Louisiana to become ghost towns, as they cannot survive without the fisherman.
The president will no longer be in office, but his handling of the oil spill will determine his place history. The name BP will live forever in the history books will refer to the oil spill as the worst manmade disaster ever.
