Company Loyalty Is In A State Of Flux And Soon Will Be A Thing Of The Past

Today, people in their forties and fifties are still driven by the old work ethic; the harder they work the more money they will make, they will get ahead quicker, retire with a company pension, and receive lifetime health benefits. Companies over the past decade are terminating people with longevity prior to them becoming vested, thus dissolving the company of responsibility for retirement. Employers realized the financial drain retirees place on the company and pensions soon will be obsolete. People in this age group when laid-off cannot find jobs in their chosen field, the recent recession has decimated their savings, and many retirees have returned to the work force in menial jobs to make ends meet. Loyalty to their company was the mantra they followed and it turned out to be a false god.

The new generation watched the previous generation’s loyalty to one company end in heartache and broken promises. The new workers have no loyalty, view jobs as five to ten year stints, and will move on for more money or personal fulfillment. They developed their own retirement system, eliminating dependence on a company, and their loyalty is to themselves. The priorities they follow are not connected to their job, nor does the job define them as a person, and their loyalty is to their family who will always be there. Employment is a way to make money and they are not interested in the gold watch and 25-year retirement party. Their work ethic is as strong as their ancestors; they work smarter not harder, and realize loyalty works to their benefit when geared toward people and not corporations.

Loyalty was the key word for generation and many benefited from it – but the world is in a great state of flux and loyalty to corporation has seen its time. Large corporations will always exist but employee turnover will be constant and small companies will be the new profit machines as employees will be loyal to a human and not a corporation.
