Greed is compared to an insatiable swine, is one of the Seven Deadly sins, and is an affliction many possess. There are many types of greed but money and power are sought after the most. The Madoff scandal was about money, while Wall Street, investment corporations, and banks are the purview of power and money.
The Madoff scandal brought the money greed train to the station, people jumped aboard and it was full leaving the terminal. His Ponzi scheme is an example of one man’s greed resulting in millions lost by those who trusted him. Mr. Madoff went to prison, his wealth was de-solved, but this was little consolation to his victims – they were not reimbursed, were affected emotionally, physically, psychologically, and no recourse.
Wall Street occupied multiple cars on the greed money train and almost sent us into a depression. Their salaries were sufficient to live a life of luxury but the greed coursing through their veins urged them to make more; consequences be damned. Greed swept through this street like a tidal wave, and when it receded, the ones drowning were the investors who lost millions. Fear griped the country and the politicians had to bail out Wall Street with the money of the drowning individuals. The banks were bleeding greed too, and the government became the doctor who patched them up so they could continue. The investors were the victims; Wall Street and the banks are back on track, its business as usual, and greed is smiling.
The Gulf oil spill is greed’s insatiable nature and destructive power. Greed lulled BP asleep with massive profits and told them they could go deeper in the Gulf and profits would soar. This obsession with money clouded their safety for the crew and ignored the damage, which caused the spill to occur. The worst-case scenario happened; decades will pass before the environment will recover, people have lost their livelihood, and greed loves watching the oil flow into the Gulf, as more is better.
Greed has no tolerance for anyone who does not succumb to his ways. He needs the people who suffer his consequences as they clean-up after the greedy ones, who return to their old ways once the situation has stabilized. Madoff is only one individual who paid for his greed, but hundreds go un-punished as government continues to bail them out. The longer greed continues controlling people the greater chance there will be another man-made disaster. Hopefully, we will learn from this mistake and will control the greed on Wall Street, investment corporations and banks. Investors and ordinary citizens have suffered enough under his hand and it is time for them to catch a break.
