WE Operate The Machine aka Computer

Sitting at the kitchen table with his granddaughter, the older man marveled at the speed she used while operating the machine. He referred to the computer as the machine because the operator had to give it direction. Watching her go from site to site he thought about the millions of people who were on their machines. His granddaughter had tried to show him how to use it but he was a hopeless case. She continued to visit sites to show him how it worked, and all the people he would be able to communicate with, if he had one. Her eyes shone with enthusiasm and the excitement she exuded was a pleasure to behold. All sixteen of his grandchildren started using the machine at a very early age and before they were in kindergarten had mastered many of its functions. The older man was glad they were up to date and hoped they wouldn’t let the machine control their lives.

Today, the world can no longer live without the machine and has raised it to a God like status. People all over the world work with these machines all day long and when they get home turn on their own. The good the machine has brought to our world has been tenfold in every field. Its speed and efficiency cannot be matched when we have to complete a project, find some data at work, or communicate with anyone in the world. The older man was afraid of the machine as he knew with everything good there is always a bad. His father taught him at an early age, a machine was only as good as its operator. The operators of today come from all walks of life and different intellects. Most are working for the good of others, but many are working for their own gain. The ones who are in it for themselves reside in the Internet. The place in the machine where evil lives and wreaks havoc on the millions who visit its many kingdoms.

The Internet is the drug which satisfies all our vices and needs. The operator becomes so absorbed, hours pass and they are unaware of it. The families suffer as the user is physically present, but emotionally absent. The Internet drug indoctrinates children at an early age with game sites and as they age, progress to more advanced games. Their goal is to get them so addicted they cannot live without these sites. Already, some children would rather interact with the Internet than with their peers. Many of these children will become people who will not be able to interact with others and become isolated from society.

Looking at his granddaughter, the older man wondered if she would become an internet junky or a face to face communicator. He hoped the latter and she would be able to experience some of the things he had in life: like getting  in some one’s face when she was angry, laughing with a group of friends and seeing the expression on their faces-priceless, smelling a loved one’s hair as you whisper a secret into their ear, cheering for your favorite team at the big game, sitting in a circle with a group discussing the joys of verbal communication, and speaking with your best friend face to face over a cup of coffee. Looking at the older man, his granddaughter said, “Papa I have a great idea. Why don’t we go to the park and you can push me on the swing.” Grinning, the older man said, “That is a great idea. Shut off the machine and go get your coat.”

As his granddaughter went for her coat he watched her leave and thought, the children may be brighter, but without face to face communication what will they achieve? The time has come for us to teach the children they are in control and can shut the machine off. His granddaughter came back in the kitchen, they headed for the door, and he knew he would help her learn this valuable lesson.
