Terrorist are suicide bombers, murders of innocent people, kidnappers and torturers of woman and children; breeders of fear and chaos to the masses; and cancer cells. That’s right, cancer cells. The news and media report the bombing and destruction, but seldom report about the cancer cells unless someone important is cured, or a new drug is being tested that will battle a certain cancer. Oncologists are the generals who fight these cancer cells with three weapons in their arsenal; surgery, radiation and drugs. New weapons are always in the development stage but often cannot be used in the war. The terrorists are aware of the oncologist plans, have developed counter measures, have been employing them for decades, and thus have seized the upper hand in the war. The cells have no religious affiliation, are not zealots, don’t conquer for land or possessions, and their mission is to kill. The generals refer to these cells as Al Cancer.
Surgery is the first line of defense when an Al Cancer cell invades the body. The oncologist wants the enemy to be cut out and during this period seeks to find out where it is hiding. If they cannot find any residual cells, no further treatment is necessary. When more cells are evident, the patient may receive chemo therapy or radiation to destroy any cells lurking in the lymphatic system. The need to excise the cells is often a mistake as the cells can be spread to other parts of the body during the surgery. Al Cancer creates large tumors, as the more cells invading the host the better their chance for victory. The generals are smart but don’t realize they are playing into the hands of the terrorists when the second weapon is deployed.
Radiation therapy is the second line of defense, and is similar to a smart bomb as it targets a specific area of the body. It destroys the cells but can affect the surrounding area which is viewed as collateral damage. The biggest problem is when the patient gets burnt from the treatment. When the oncologists speak with the patient about this problem they usually tell them it has eradicated the cells and they will not need any more radiation. Al Cancer is sacrificing the cells which are being bombed, and go hide in other parts of the body. However, if a few cells are discovered after the bombings the third line of defense is unleashed. Al Cancer looks forward to this battle even though it sustains heavy losses. The terrorists send all its troops to the front knowing the oncologists cannot use their smart bombs. This battle is going to affect the host’s whole body and they will be weak, as the chemo drugs are poison. The chemo drugs are chemical warfare and the terrorists find nooks and crannies in the body to wait for the poisoning to end. When the oncologist retests the patient, they usually cannot find terrorists present; they have been successful once again. The patient has won the battle and goes on with their lives.
Five years pass, the patient revisits their oncologist who declares them cured. They are now in the survivor club, go out into the world, declare freedom from Al Cancer, praise the medical profession, and run for the cure. Al Cancer has been hibernating and planning its next attack. The cells have gathered, chemo has made them stronger, new immune weapons have developed, and an army three times its original size has formed. The first attack is a massive tumor which is seven times bigger, grows five times faster, and involves more than one organ. Surgery is not an option and radiation only destroys a small group of cells. Chemo therapy bounces off the cells new immune weapons and kills more healthy cells of the patient. The oncologists quickly come to the realization that the terrorists will win and they will have to tell the patient.
Al Cancer is the ultimate terrorist. They don’t have a nuclear bomb or a dirty bomb, and use the person’s body against them. The attacks are always sudden and no one is immune. Some will survive the attacks but eventually another disease will invade. The government has declared war against Al Cancer, but it will only win some of the battles. We must all be vigilant, see the physicians when anything is wrong, for the sooner the cells are discovered the better chance we have of being a true survivor.
