Are You Afraid Of The Dark ?

In this country millions of people are afraid of the dark. Are you one of them? Do you still sleep with a night light on? Is your TV always on when you go to sleep? When walking into a dark room do you hesitate? Are you fearful of going outside after the sun goes down? If you answer yes to any of these questions you are afraid of the dark. There is nothing to be ashamed of as you are not alone. The advantage you have is you know what your fear is. The steps you have taken to adapt to this fear have not really impinged on your life. Some people have had a traumatic experience involving the dark, while others have seen a movie about vampires, werewolves, or other creatures who occupy the dark. Night has gotten a bad rap because dark is to night as light is to day. Night like day has its own features and stages. Maybe, if people who are afraid of the dark learned a little more about nighttime, it would assist them with their fear. In order to make this easier, we are going to indicate in a twenty four hour period, half is day and half night. This will vary during the year but for our purpose let’s use this as our base. Midnight is the middle of the night and the beginning of the new day. The first six hours of the night, day is still in control. Most never look at midnight as the new day and perceive day as the time of light and not darkness. Night greets day at this time and watches over it for the next six hours.  Day is a very slow riser and gives night the six hours back it took earlier.

The four stages of night are: 6pm to midnight, midnight to 2am, 2am to 5am, and 5am to 6am.

6pm to midnight; is the first half of the night. Once the sun goes down, working people are usually on their way home, or actively going out for a drink, meeting friends, working late, and picking up family members.  Eight to eleven is when people go out to eat, see a movie or hang around at home. Eleven to midnight is when the stragglers finally arrive home and most are in bed before the witching hour midnight. The darkness during this period goes from light to medium. Most are not afraid at this time as many other humans are out and about. People view this as the end of the day and don’t want to be up after midnight.

Midnight to 2am; is when the dark becomes darker and the atmosphere changes. The night noise goes from a normal conversational tone to a quiet whisper and the insects sensing the change simmer down. The last party goers coming out of  bars, feel the change in darkness, and a chill runs over their bodies.  A dread starts to overcome them as they scurry toward their cars. The streets are almost empty, and imaginations are running wild, as they reach the safety of their homes.

2am to 5am; the night and its darkness are in full control and this is the hardest, blackest, and quietest time. It is the hardest for the workers of the graveyard shift to stay awake, as the night wants all to be asleep. Those who work this shift for many years are familiar with night’s nuances and have adapted to them, but it doesn’t take away their urge to sleep. The night workers are the most independent workers we have because decisions have to be made on the spot. These workers are medical personnel, emergency workers, policeman and fireman who make life and death decisions. They embrace the night and are never afraid.

The darkness is the blackest and with it comes evil. Evil hates the daylight and at days beginning it is in control. The people who embrace evil are kindred spirits with the darkness. They are as comfortable slinking in the shadows as the people who walk in the sunlight. Watching from the shadows they attack the innocent as they sleep and those not familiar with the night.

Stillness comes along with quiet in this stage. Those that know the night feel it is alive and the stillness is broken only by the sound of a siren or a storm. Most night people know all its moods and have accepted them. In return night rewards them with a quiet stillness. The stillness is like the stop action in a sporting event, one you can feel and touch. The quiet embraces them while its calm spreads through their mind, body and soul. Many people are not use to this type of silence and cannot stay in its presence as it feels like your whole body is encompassed by it. The true night people can get much more accomplished because of this quiet. Wrapped in its comfort their thinking is uninterrupted by the noise of day. Death visits frequently at this time as the dying like the calm of the quiet. Many who have been out at this time feel a chill pass over them. They know what it is but never speak about it.

5am to 6am; day is fully awake and starts to lighten the sky in anticipation of the sun. The people who worship the sun begin to stir and for many, their day has already begun.  Some sit and watch the darkness dwindle as the light approaches. The people head out of their homes warmed by the light never thinking if it wasn’t for the night there would be no day.
