The Death Card

The Death Card #2

This was originally post on Feb 13, 10. I revised it and hope it will be a little lighter to read.

Moments before we are born, Death steps into the room, stands in the corner; and the instant we are born walks over to us, and places a card in our hand. The front of the card is our death date and the back has one of three symbols representing the way we will die – the first one is a serpentine ‘S’ denoting sudden death, the second is a straight line symbolizing a quick death, and the third is a long line signifying a slow death. He vanishes and we will not remember this moment until He comes to collect the card. We begin our living journey, not realizing we are born to die.

Death is viewed as a living breathing entity, which can be summoned to take people away, as the Grim Reaper who kills indiscriminately; as the Devils servant, worshipped by many to tap into his power, and is feared by all because of his association with the unknown and attachment with the word sudden. He has no control over the time, place, date, or circumstances and is the card toil collector.

Society continually feeds our fear of Death through the media and medical profession. The only forms of Death broadcast are mass murders and sudden death – one is random and the other instantaneous. Parents shield their children from death as if it is the Plague not realizing it is a part of life all will experience. Earlier generations use to wake the deceased in the home with the children around so Death didn’t become this great monster who swoops down and wipes out life. Children back then realized birth was the beginning of life and death was the end. This approach took the fear of death away and until we start teaching the present generation about death they will never loss their fear.  The other obstacle Death has to overcome is the medical profession and technology. Again the media only shows the newest machine or cancer cure that is five years down the road. People perceive drugs and technology as a cure all and Doctors condone this behavior with continued treatment as fighting tooth and nail we will prevent Death. This will never happen no matter how hard and long you fight Death will come when the date on the card has expired.

Some in our society have come to the conclusion Death is the end of life, have accepted it, are not fearful, and go to Hospice to die in comfort and peace surrounded by their loved ones. Hospice is a step in the right direction but still shunned by society as those who go there are viewed as giving up and our society is not made up of quitters. It will take many years before Hospice will be a complete part of society and will only happen when society no longer fears Death.

Death cannot catch a break: nobody wants to die; there is always something more to accomplish, and birth gives us the right to a long life.  We all carry Death’s card, when he comes will you cringe in fear and beg Him for more time; or will you welcome Him with open arms, hand Him his card, and tell Him it is a good day to die.

With kindest regards, Judowolf
