The older man sat at his desk typing away at his computer. He had been working steadily for the past five weeks. Once he thought he had mastered a function, it would throw something new at him. He had just finished writing a long article. While he was editing it, it disappeared from the screen. For two hours he tried to figure out where it had gone. Finally, he shut down the machine and walked away. Going in to see his wife, he explained the problem. She replied, “That sucks, but don’t worry, you wrote it and will remember.” As usual she was right. The older man has been with his wife for twenty years. He considers them the best years of his life. It is a great feeling when you can depend on someone who supports you no matter what happens. Unfortunately, there are many people in the world who have no one.
Walking back to the machine the older man sat down and stared at it. The computer has the magical internet. The magic provides immediate gratification and instantaneous news. The news updates alone can drive you crazy. How many times do we have to see and hear the same story? The stories are now more sensational in nature and usually about murder, kidnapping or scandal. When the rich and famous are involved and sex is the issue it’s a bonus. A story is beat to death until the next one comes along. Thus, we have an endless flow of bad story after bad story. People sit in front of their computers or on their couch and watch every juicy detail, the more sordid the better. The next one is around the corner and when it breaks they are ready.
Today, nobody has any privacy. Once a tragedy strikes your family, the vultures (any type of reporter) circle your home to get a piece of you. If, that isn’t bad enough they ask, “HOW DO YOU FEEL!?” This is the most dumb, totally inappropriate, and most insensitive question to ask. The reporters who ask it should be beaten with their microphones. What do you think they are going to say?
“I really didn’t care for my child and hope they are never found.”
“My husband was a jerk and I hope he got what he deserved.”
“My mother was old and had lived too long anyhow.”
“There is no doubt my sister-in-law had something to do with my brothers disappearance. When they find the body, they will find evidence that will implicate her in his death.”
What would the vultures say if they were the ones on the other side of the mic?
“I feel just horrible about my brother’s sudden death. I can’t talk as I still can’t believe this has happened. What are we going to do? Someone must have seen him before he disappeared. Please would someone just come forward?”
Then like the people they ask the question too, the look of complete loss would spread over their face. There brain would be numb, as shock has taken hold and they won’t even know what to do or say. The vultures never think about the victims. Their job is to get the story and give the people what they want. The families will be forgotten when the next sensational story breaks.
Turning on his computer the older man came out of his reverie. Just before he started to type, he wondered how the families were doing after a few days in the headlines.
