A Handshake

As the older man sat at the red light he glanced over to his left and a Chrysler Le Baron was next to him. A smile crossed his lips as he remembered the one he owned many years ago. It was red and caused him a thousand problems. The major problem was with those darn tires, which always had slow leaks.
He remembered driving around an industrial park looking for a mechanic a friend had told him about. Unbeknown to him, the bay he went to was the wrong one. Getting out of the car he approached a man working on a car and asked him if he fixed slow leaks. The mechanic told him to bring it around back, and when the leak was no longer a problem the mechanic said, “No charge.” The older man was stunned. This was his lucky day. He thanked him and said he would be back when he needed work on the car. The mechanic smiled at him and said, “I’ll be here”. The older man kept his word and continued to bring the car back multiple times to have his slow leaks repaired. Then the day came when the drive shaft fell out of the car and he called the mechanic, who had the car towed to his shop. When the repairs were finished, the older man went to pick it up. He was a little anxious since he didn’t have all the money and needed the car to do his work. The mechanic told him how much it was and when he did, the older man stated he only had enough money to pay for half. In two weeks he was getting payed and would bring the rest of the money then. The mechanic hesitated for a few seconds, looked him in the eye, and then he handed the older man his keys and said, “Shake on it.” They shook hands and the older man got into his car and drove away. Two weeks later, he walked into the shop and the mechanic rolled out from under the car he was working on. The older man then handed him the rest of the payment. Taking the money, the mechanic smiled, put it in his pocket and said, “Thank you.” “Aren’t you going to count it?” the older man asked. “No need to, I have no doubt it is all there.” As the older man started to walk out of the shop, he turned back to the mechanic and asked, “How did you know I would come back?” Smiling, the mechanic said, “We shook on it.”
As the light turned green and the older man drove along he smiled, for he had now known this mechanic for the past 15 years, all because of slow leaks and a handshake.
